Hey there,

I'm not sure if it's best to do this in Final Cut Pro or Motion...

I'm still on Final Cut Pro 6...

I have an animation which has been given to me in 1080p res .jpeg individual frames- there's a lot: composed originally for 24 fps running time 38secs

The other important technical detail is the colour depth in the original is 16bpc.

How can I use the complete jpeg sequence to render to:

HD 1080p (24fps)
HD 1080p (25fps)
HD 1080i

720p
480p

Thank you very much for assisting me with this.

I really appreciate it. :D

Use motion... As fcp doesn't deal with Tiffs, jpeg or targas all that well.

You can actually use quicktime for this as well. It's simple and quick. (Go to file-open image sequence- and select the first frame in the jpeg series) But I must stress, you should only create the 24fps quicktime from the jpegs (since that is the accurate framerate... If you need to create a 25 fps hd quicktime then you need to convert it using cinema tools and fcp, so that the timing is correct.

My bulletproof recipe for conversion is below:

converting from HD 24p to SD PAL (works for 30p and 60p too)

COPY HD material to folder HD 24 at 25p in elements/media
use Cinema tools to conform material to 25p

Double check in CInema Tools/analysis that the new framerate has taken
rename HD material as HD24at25p

Open fresh FCP project
make a bin for each film

Mark each cut including first frame
pad first 9 markers with zeros
make into subclips (cmd U)

drop subclips into PAL 16x9 timeline
varispeed to 96% using motion tab
adjust scale of all clips to 54% (default is 53.33, but just make it safe)

remove any shift field filters

add extra frames to individual shots (the longer shots) to get edit to correct length (by varispeed again)

render and check

if OK, then make 4x3 centre cut-out version: duplicate sequence and rename "4x3"
de-anamorphicise sequence, then change distort setting to 6.67
